Concuseness is a story about what it means to keep going when it feels like the whole world is falling apart. Set in the year 2040, this near-future cyberpunk tale blends neon aesthetics with the very real struggles of humanity. The protagonist has lost his family, and now, every day is a battle to find a new reason to live and reclaim what we call "life energy."
I was deeply inspired by a grim statistic: in 2024, more than 770,000 people worldwide took their own lives. This staggering number made me realize that I wanted to create a game—not about fighting robots or epic shootouts, but about how a person in such a world can hold on to themselves and find new meaning.
Despite its small scale (Concuseness was developed in just three days as part of Minijam 179), I poured into it all the emotions that drive me—from my admiration for CD Projekt RED and their legendary projects (The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077) to my deep respect for narrative-driven games like Disco Elysium. In Concuseness, you’ll find:
- Branching dialogues with philosophical depth – Your choices shape the story. Even though it’s a short game, every decision carries emotional weight.
- A guitar-playing mechanic tied to memories of the past – Because sometimes, holding onto the right memory can save us from darkness.
- Small quests and object interactions within an apartment inspired by cyberpunk aesthetics, reminiscent of V’s apartment from Cyberpunk 2077.
- A unique art style with delicate outlines, adding a melancholic neon glow to the world of the future.
- Localization in six languages: Russian, Ukrainian, English, German, Spanish, and French—I wanted as many people as possible to connect with this story.
- Flexible settings so players can tailor the experience to their liking.
At its heart, Concuseness is about a person who has lost themselves but hasn’t given up the fight for their own life. Their inner energy is what drives the story forward. This game serves as a reminder that even in a world of high-tech advancements and artificial organs, we remain human—capable of deep emotions and real struggles. Every action we take, every moment spent meaningfully, is invaluable.
I plan to continue working on Concuseness, fixing bugs, and expanding the narrative. I’d love to hear your feedback—what moved you, what could be improved, and what you'd like to see in the future.
Thank you for taking the time to check out Concuseness. I hope this small game leaves a lasting impression and gives you a reason to reflect on something truly important.
